Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has emerged as the Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Umahi contested the local government election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and secured victory after a campaign centred on grassroots development, economic growth and improved administration.
Shortly after he was declared the winner, the newly elected council chairman announced that he would forgo his official salary and allowances throughout his tenure.
According to Umahi, the decision is aimed at ensuring that more of the local government’s resources are directed towards projects and programmes that will have a direct impact on residents.
He pledged to prioritise infrastructure development, youth empowerment and job creation as part of his administration’s key areas of focus.
The 28-year-old also promised to create more economic opportunities and improve the delivery of basic services across Ohaozara.
During his campaign, Umahi repeatedly emphasised the importance of grassroots development, arguing that local governments should play a more effective role in addressing the everyday challenges faced by residents.
He also presented himself as part of a younger generation seeking to introduce a different approach to public administration.
Umahi said he would apply private-sector principles such as efficiency, innovation and accountability in running the council.
The new chairman further stressed the need to strengthen governance at the grassroots level by creating opportunities for young people and improving the economic and social conditions of residents.
