LASPA Announces New On-Street Parking System to Improve Traffic in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has urged motorists to embrace responsible parking as it prepares to roll out a structured on-street parking programme aimed at creating a safer, more organised and efficient parking system across the state.

A statement by the Lagos state government the General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority, LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, made the appeal while speaking on the activities of the agency, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving parking management in Lagos.

She said motorists should begin to make parking arrangements part of their travel plans as the authority gets set to commence the structured on-street parking initiative.

Adelabu encouraged Lagos residents to adopt a new parking culture by planning their trips ahead and considering available parking spaces before setting out.

“Before leaving home, motorists should think about where they are going, the most suitable mode of transportation and the availability (nearest) approved parking slots to their destination. Parking should become a pre-thought, not an afterthought,” she said.

The LASPA boss also announced that the agency was ready to implement the enhanced On-Street Parking initiative after completing several stages of planning, testing and system improvements.

According to her, streets designated for the programme across Lagos will be properly marked to show where parking is allowed, where paid parking applies and where parking is prohibited.

She advised motorists to pay close attention to road signs and pavement markings, including red lines, single yellow lines and double yellow lines, noting that they are intended to improve traffic management and enhance public safety.

Adelabu explained that the concept of paid parking was already familiar to many Lagos motorists, adding that the new reform was designed to promote transparency and accountability in parking management.

“Lagosians are already paying for parking in many parts of the city. Our goal is to ensure that these payments are made through a structured, accountable system that benefits the public rather than unregulated individuals,” she added.

The LASPA General Manager appealed to motorists across the state to support the ongoing reforms by obeying parking regulations, observing traffic signs and embracing responsible parking habits.

She reaffirmed that public cooperation and shared responsibility were critical to the success of the structured on-street parking initiative, saying they would help build a more organised, accessible and efficient Lagos.
