Household kerosene prices surged across Nigeria in April 2026, with residents of Sokoto, Kebbi and Lagos paying close to N4,000 per litre, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS Household Kerosene Price Watch showed Sokoto recorded the highest average price at N3,965.10 per litre, followed by Kebbi at N3,808.75 and Lagos at N3,790.90. Katsina, Edo, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara also recorded high prices above N3,300 per litre.
At the lower end, Bayelsa recorded the cheapest average price at N1,815.40 per litre, while Kogi and Yobe sold at N1,982.02 and N2,235.77 respectively.
Kerosene, once a major cooking fuel in Nigeria, used to sell between N50 and N100 per litre before subsidy removal in 2016 and the continued depreciation of the naira triggered sharp price increases
Many households have now switched to cooking gas or charcoal as kerosene becomes increasingly unaffordable.
The report also showed major price increases between March and April 2026, with Kaduna recording the highest rise at 35.16 per cent, followed by Bayelsa, Katsina, Imo and Akwa Ibom.
