The Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I, has passed away after 14 years on the throne of his forebears.
The announcement was made in a recent statement issued by the spokesperson of the Alawe-in-Council, High Chief Gbenga Agbona.
The statement noted that the people of Ilawe-Ekiti received the news with deep sorrow and total submission to the will of God.
According to the council, Oba Alabi distinguished himself as a custodian of culture, a unifier of his people and an advocate for the development of Ilawe-Ekiti during his reign.
The late monarch was also described as a promoter of peace, education, youth development and traditional values, earning him respect beyond the community.
“As a Royal Father, Oba Alabi walked with humility and dignity, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. His leadership strengthened the unity of Ilawe and left an indelible mark on the community he served passionately,” the statement read.
The council announced traditional directives following the monarch’s passing, including the closure of Obas Market and shops along major roads in parts of the town until after the final rites, while drumming and loud celebrations were also suspended.
Residents were urged to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while security agencies were directed to ensure compliance with the directives and maintain peace in the community.
