The Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor, entertainer, and humanitarian, Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke.

Reports indicate that the actor died after battling complications linked to advanced metastatic kidney cancer. News of his passing surfaced on May 12, 2026, sparking widespread reactions from fans, colleagues, and members of the public across social media.

Concerns about the actor’s health had intensified earlier in 2025 after he withdrew from social media and public engagements. A resurfaced video showing the actor looking noticeably slimmer further fueled speculation about his wellbeing at the time. However, individuals close to him reportedly dismissed rumours of any illness, insisting that he had only taken a break from work and online activities for personal reasons.

Following growing public reactions and questions surrounding his sudden death, the family of the late actor officially confirmed the tragic development.

In a statement shared via his Instagram page on Wednesday, the family disclosed that Alex Ekubo passed away at Evercare Hospital after suffering complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke,” the statement partly read.

“After a brief but courageous battle, Alexx passed away at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.”

The family described his final days as marked by strength and faith, noting that “he bore his pain with remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and enduring hope, believing that one day his testimony would be shared with the world”.

They also requested prayers and privacy, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced later.

“During this deeply painful time, we humbly ask for privacy and prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul, and for all who mourn this immense loss.

“Further details regarding funeral arrangements and other family matters will be communicated in due course.

“We sincerely thank everyone for the love, support, prayers, and understanding extended to the family throughout this period,” the statement concluded.

The actor was widely celebrated for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry and his humanitarian efforts, earning admiration from fans both within and outside Nigeria.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, friends, and supporters who described him as talented, humble, and impactful throughout his career in the entertainment industry.
