Rita Ushie, popularly known as Raye, has come under disciplinary action from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) following her viral criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In March 2025, Raye publicly expressed concerns over Nigeria’s economic situation, describing the Tinubu administration as “terrible.” She referenced the rising cost of living and alleged that the government was not addressing the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
As a result of these comments, Raye was summoned to a disciplinary panel at the NYSC orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos. At the hearing, she was informed that her service year would be extended by 60 days, despite her public apology and the fact that she had only one month remaining in her service period.
The decision has since drawn criticism from some civil society groups and human rights activists, including Omoyele Sowore and Festus Ogun. They argue that the sanction infringes on Raye’s right to free expression and raises concerns about democratic accountability.
