Access Bank’s ₦193.5B Tech Spend Falls Short as Fraud Incidents Soar in 2024

In 2024, Access Holdings Plc-parent company of Access Bank-made a record-breaking ₦193.5 billion investment in technology to tackle financial fraud. The move, a 147% increase from the previous year, earned praise as the largest IT expenditure in Nigeria’s banking sector. Yet, the results tell a more complex story.

Despite the massive outlay, Access Bank reported 11,410 successful fraud incidents last year, leading to losses of ₦3.5 billion. Although this marks a drop from the ₦8.6 billion lost in 2023, the number of successful fraud attempts jumped by over 70%-from 6,634 cases to more than 11,000-raising serious concerns about the bank’s digital security infrastructure.

Industry experts argue that cybercriminals may be evolving faster than the systems designed to stop them. “The rise in fraud cases, despite advanced tech investments, suggests a gap in execution,” said one analyst.

Access Holdings, however, defends its strategy. Acting Group CEO Bolaji Agbede stated, “Our customers’ trust is our most valuable asset. We have chosen to lead with innovation and resilience, and the results reflect our commitment.”

Still, observers caution that focusing solely on technology is not enough. Insider threats, human error, and a lack of customer education are vulnerabilities that sophisticated software can’t fully eliminate.

This issue extends beyond Access Bank. Nigeria’s financial ecosystem is battling a 112% increase in fraud cases nationwide from 2019 to 2023, according to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). Experts say that while IT investments are essential, they must be complemented by stronger internal processes, staff training, regulatory compliance, and customer awareness.

The Access Bank case illustrates the urgent need for Nigerian banks to broaden their fraud prevention strategies. Without a multi-pronged approach, even the most cutting-edge systems may not be enough to protect customers in an increasingly digital economy.
